Poetry

There is a world of poetry in death. I have personally never been to a funeral that has not had some kind of poem read aloud, dedicated partly to the person having lost and in part dedicated to loss itself.

Expression of emotions is something I have personally struggled with but for a number of years have been experimenting with spoken word. For the majority of this project I could not find a way to incorporate spoken word or poetry with the research on sustainable death care. Consilience is an online journal created by Sam Illingworth.

The journal explores scientific themes whilst highlighting artistic responses to specific themes. Inspired by Sam illingworths poetry in response to science I started experimenting with poetry in response to loss. My loss.

Exploring this subject meant experimenting with ways to exhibit poetry, would this poetry amount to a performance or would it be something silent. A book of collected poems perhaps. Despite deaths desire to be seen, often feelings of grief and mourning are hidden. My exploration of poetry aimed to give a voice to my grief and also to my research.
